The Passadiços – Scenic Wooden Walkways
The region offers several beautifully built passadiços — wooden boardwalk trails that make it easy to explore breathtaking scenery without steep climbs or technical terrain. These routes follow rivers, cross small bridges and lead you through lush forests and peaceful valleys. They are perfect for anyone who enjoys relaxed walking, photography or simply being immersed in nature. 2 examples:
Passadiços do Cerro da Candosa
The Passadiços do Cerro da Candosa lead you through one of the most enigmatic corners of the Vila Nova do Ceira area (Góis). This wooden walkway winds through dramatic quartzite cliffs and ends at the stunning river gorge known as Cabril — a place where the Rio Ceira has carved its way through rock over millennia. The route is relatively short (around 600 meters, 1.2 km round trip) and features approximately 450 steps, making it an accessible yet rewarding experience. Along the way you’ll enjoy sweeping views over the natural landscape, lush forest, and the valley below — a perfect short walk for sunset visits or as a gentle nature break.
Passadiços do Mondego
The Passadiços do Mondego is a spectacular 12-kilometre wooden-walkway route that follows the course of the mighty Mondego River and some of its tributaries. Starting at the Caldeirão Dam, the trail crosses rivers and streams, passes through peaceful riverbanks, old mills and even abandoned weaving factories — reminders of the region’s industrial heritage. The route features wooden boardwalks, suspension bridges and stretches of old rural paths, offering a mix of nature, history and adventure. For those seeking a lighter stroll, there are shorter 2-kilometre variants suitable for families or visitors with reduced mobility.
